The Katsina State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), joined the rest of the world in celebrating the 2025 World Radio Day with the theme “Radio and Climate Change: Amplifying Voices for a Sustainable Future.”
The event was held at the NUJ Secretariat in Katsina, and brought together prominent media professionals, government officials, and key stakeholders in the journalism where the traditional ruler spoke on the importance and relevance of radio.
Speaking as the Father of the Day, the Kanwan Katsina, District Head of Ketare, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara, asserted that radio remains the most accessible and affordable medium of communication, especially in remote areas where television, newspapers, and the internet may not be available.
The traditional ruler spoke of the crucial role of radio in educating, informing, and entertaining the public, as well as fostering national unity and public enlightenment.

Reaffirming his long-standing advocacy for the establishment of new FM stations in Katsina, Daura, and Funtua to enhance grassroots communication, revenue generation, and employment opportunities, the Kanwan Katsina called on the Katsina State House of Assembly to expedite the process.
The Kanwan Katsina also called on the management of radio stations to prioritize the welfare of journalists by ensuring the timely payment of salaries and allowances, regular promotions, and access to professional training programs.

He stressed that investing in the well-being and capacity-building of journalists is essential for maintaining high standards in broadcasting and aligning with global best practices.
Turning to journalists, especially those in radio broadcasting, the Kanwan Katsina urged them to uphold professionalism, ethics, and truthfulness in their work, ensuring that their broadcasts promote peace, development, and accountability.
While congratulating award recipients at the event, the traditional ruler encouraged others to remain committed to excellence, noting that journalism is a profession built on consistency and impact.
The royal father commended the NUJ Katsina State Council for its commitment to celebrating World Radio Day annually, recognizing its role in honoring journalists and reinforcing the importance of radio in society.
Reaffirming his commitment to the growth of journalism in Katsina State and Nigeria, the Monarch pledged that the doors of his palace remain open for collaboration with the media.
World Radio day is Celebrated annually on 13 February as designated by the United Nations, to recognize the profound impact of Radio in shaping Societies, promoting Dialogue and fostering inclusive communication across the globe.
Additionally, UNESCO proclaimed February 13 as World Radio Day in 2011, chosen to commemorate the establishment of United Nations Radio on February 13, 1946.
